May 25, 2006 - Fundraising activity for the Trust reached an exciting new level with the launch of the International Campaign for the Restoration of the Patan Royal Palace Complex at Clarence House in London. HRH The Prince of Wales hosted a fundraising luncheon attended by international and Nepalese supporters of the Trust in order to raise awareness of this important new initiative . An exhibition of original architectural drawings was presented at the event to highlight the restoration accomplishments of the Trust and to underscore the importance and urgency of future work in the Valley.
The Complex defines one side of a rich medieval square which is the most important example of 17th century town planning that survives in Nepal. |
Backing on largely abandoned palace gardens the complex is the single most important - and threatened - historical complex in the country, and perhaps in South Asia. Restoration will include an adaptive reuse plan to expand the Patan Museum. Dr. Eduard Sekler, Professor
Emeritus of Harvard University, will act as Senior Advisor for the project.
Major donors in attendance were Beatrix Ost and Ludwig Kuttner, and Nepalese sponsors Pratima and Prithivi Pande, and Prabhakar S.J.B. Rana. The event raised more than $100,000. On behalf of the Board of Directors of the Trust, we would like to extend our thanks to all participants for their generous support of the project and for making this wonderful event a success. |
