June 7, 2006 - Mr. Prabhakar S.J.B. Rana was honored for his pioneering support of cultural heritage conservation in the Kathmandu Valley at the annual Trust fundraiser “New York for Nepal.”

The event was held for the second year at the residence of Andrew Solomon and John Habich in Manhattan. In addition to a cocktail reception the event included a silent auction which raised more than $85,000 toward ongoing and future projects in Nepal.

Mr. Rana rallied businessmen to the Trust’s first corporate campaign in Nepal in support of historic preservation. The eight year Kathmandu Darbar Initiative has restored, or is in the process of restoring, nine temples at the heart of the Kathmandu Darbar World Heritage Site at Hanuman Dhoka.
Mr. Siddhartha S.J.B. Rana represented Mr. Prabhakar S.J.B. Rana and presided over the inauguration of the restored Jagannath Temple on November 27th, 2006. The Jagannath Temple is the most significant monument of the Kathmandu Darbar Initiative for its intact program of historic woodcarving. The completion of the four year restoration of this temple represented a significant milestone for the project and a major contribution to architectural conservation in the Valley.

Mr. Rana and his partners in this project, which include Soaltee Hotel Ltd., Nepal Lever, Surya Nepal, Standard Chartered Bank Nepal Ltd., Nepal Investment Bank Ltd., and Mr. & Mrs. Prithivi Bahadur Pande have provided funding which has been matched by the Robert W. Wilson Challenge to Conserve our Heritage under the auspices of the World Monuments Fund.
