An new wing at Patan Museum will showcase the valley’s architectural heritage and serve as a repository for recovered stolen art.
KVPT has compiled a large collection representing over 50 years of its architectural research and documentation, including publications, drawings, plans, models, photographs, and artefacts. In collaboration with the Frances Loeb Library at Harvard University’s Graduate School of Design, these materials are archived as a resource for researchers and practitioners.
In Patan, housed in the Mulchowk and Sundari Chowk courtyards restored by KVPT, a new wing of the Patan Museum will serve as the physical venue for a curated selection of these materials. Envisioned as an extension of the museum, the Architectural Galleries will function as a cultural institution to increase public awareness about the role of architecture in society. In addition to the architectural archives, it will showcase traditional architectural elements such as carved wooden pillars and windows, as well as salvaged terracotta, stone, and bronze sculptures. The new wing will also feature temporary exhibitions related to Nepal’s built environment. An extensive collection of books and periodicals will also be available in a reading room and study centre open to the general public.
A room in the restored Sundari Chowk building will serve as a repository for stolen art objects recovered from the global art market. Since many of these objects are religiously important, they will be accessible for worship within the museum setting. This will be the first dedicated space in Nepal for the protection and display of recovered art.
