KVPT has compiled a large collection of over 50 years of architectural research and documentation, including publications, drawings, plans, models, photographs, and artefacts. In collaboration with the Francis Loeb Library at Harvard University’s Graduate School of Design, KVPT plans to make these materials available online for public use as part of the Nepal Architecture Archive. Housed in the recently restored Mulchowk and Sundari Chowk courtyards in Patan, the Museum of Architecture will be the physical home of this archive. Envisioned as an extension to the nearby Patan Museum, the Museum will function as a cultural institution to increase public awareness about the role of architecture in society. In addition to the architectural archives, the Museum will showcase carved wooden pillars and windows, and salvaged terracotta, stone, and bronze sculptures. The Museum will also feature temporary, curated exhibitions on on all aspects of the built environment of Nepal. An extensive collection of books and periodicals will be made available for use in a reading room and study centre open to the general public. A room in the restored Sundari Chowk building will serve as a repository for stolen art objects recovered from the global art market. Since many of these objects are religiously important, they will be accessible for worship within the Museum setting. This room will be the first space dedicated to the protection and display of stolen art in Nepal.
